England vs France betting preview
The plum tie of group D kicks of that group when France face off against England in the early kick off. These two sides were actually paired together in the same group in Euro 2004, with the game between the two finishing 2-1 to France on that occasion, thanks to two goals from Zinedine Zidane. Could this be the defining tie in the group and decide which of these teams finish top then, or will it end all square?
England and France are similar odds and can barely be separated. There are though, much better odds available on a draw, as neither team will want to lose the opening fixture. France aren’t among the early favourites to win the competition outright, mainly due to their performance at the last World Cup, but they do have some real quality players. Their main strength lies in midfield with the likes of Nasri and Ribery likely to cause England all sorts of problems, but France aren’t so strong in defence. In qualifying they weren’t really tested against strong opposition, but they have beaten both England and Brazil in friendly games over the last year or so. Karim Benzema looks the most likely source of a French goal and is looking a good bet to open the scoring on the night. That victory over England the last time the two met, and Wayne Rooney’s absence, may well give France a slight psychological advantage. England England’s first game of Euro 2012 is a difficult one against a technically good French side. Wayne Rooney’s absence will also mean that Fabio Capello starts the competition without his strongest possible line up. Who replaces Rooney will be debated and a difficult one to call, but the most likely answer is Darren Bent. Capello appears to have learnt from England’s poor World Cup campaign, but this will be a big test for him. The importance of the game means he may well go a bit more defensive than usual, and so a correct score of 1-1 is looking like a good bet. Especially as England have improved defensively, but still seem to struggle in front of goal. Darren Bent has a good goal record for England, getting some important goals in qualification, and the Aston Villa striker is most definitely worth backing to score at any time during the match. The fitness of midfielder Jack Wilshere may have a big impact on the game. The Arsenal man missed a lot of the club season, but if he’s match fit he can be the difference for England.
